History

Streams of Civilization is the only 'textbook' I really like. It takes a cultural approach instead of a strictly political (kings and wars) one. It has interesting facts you won't see elsewhere, like ancient Africa. Good for reference. Creationist young earth perspective.

Older 'Living books' overviews of world history - Story of Mankind/Picturesque Tale of Progress by Olive Miller, and H.A.

Guerber books republished by Christine Miller, and Genevieve Foster books. Story of Liberty by Charles Coffin.

The Mainspring of Human Progress by Henry Grady Weaver-- How freedom is necessary for prosperity.

Animal Farm by George Orwell --a classic on the dangers of totalitarianism.

The Giver -- fantasy about the dangers of the 'perfect society'.

A History of US series by Joy Hakim for American-- secular but tries to look at both sides of controversies.

Richard Maybury's Uncle Eric books on economics, law, and history from a Founding Fathers/constitutional perspective.

Clarence B. Carson's very conservative set on American history.

Usbourne and Kingfisher fact books. Esp. Kingfisher book of the Ancient World.

The Riddle of Exodus by James D. Long and Unwrapping the Pharaohs (comes with videos) by David Down for the problems with Egyptian chronology and how ancient history fits with Bible history.

Drive Thru History - humorous 'History Channel style' Christian history videos for teens. Filmed on location.

The Middle Ages videos at the Richland Library (made in Britain).

Torch of the Testimony by John Kennedy -- the history of Christians outside of the big Catholic and Protestant churches.

Diana Waring's tapes on history provide a fast, interesting big picture and some great stories.

www.dreamsandvisions.com -- well done Christian documentary re-enactments of 5 Muslims who became Christians. Insight into the religious and political situation and mentality of 5 different Muslim cultures. These are in native languages with English subtitles for anyone to watch on the web.

We read lots of historical fiction and biographies. Missionary/key Christian figure biographies give perspective and balance on church history as well as insight into other cultures and the political situation of the time.

My kid's always knew more history than I expected by just reading interesting books. And they LIKED it.
