Students will be introduced to the fundamental aspects of communications and public speaking. They will select a topic related to the American Free Enterprise System, prepare a four to six minute speech, present the speech in class, receive feedback from fellow participants and the coordinator, and then refine that speech each week.
The goal is to provide the students with the skills to be effective public speakers and specifically to help them prepare to compete in the National Management Associations American Enterprise Speech Contest, although there is no requirement to enter the contest.
The material used in this class is drawn from the Toastmasters Speechcraft, the Junior Achievement Eighth Grade Course, which focuses on the Free Enterprise System, and the coordinators own experience. Student speeches are videotaped around week five to allow the student to review their own presentation from the perspective of the audience.
Edward Schwier and the Hanford NMA Chapter will offer a free six-week, one-night-a-week, public speaking classes for high school students who are interested in improving their communications skills. The classes will use preparing for the American Enterprise Speech Contest as the teaching mechanism, however there is no requirement for the student to enter the contest to attend.
Ed is also accepting volunteers to help with the classes or the contests.
The Mid-Columbia Leadership Development Association and Energy-Northwest Chapter American Enterprise Speech Contests will be held the week of February 18, 2008. First Prize is $300. The top two finishers from each Chapter advance to the Council Contest, which will be held the week of March 3, 2008. First Prize is $500 with the Winner advancing to the Pacific North Region American Enterprise Speech Contest in Las Vegas, April 12, 2008. First Prize $2,000 US Savings Bond. The Region winner becomes one of the six finalists at the National Contest in San Diego, CA on November 1, 2008, where the winner will receive a $10,000 US Savings Bond.
Last year's local winner, David Harris (homeschooler), also won the Pacific North Contest in San Antonio in May 2007 advancing as one of the finalists in Portland in November 2007.
